Meet PTSD & Emotional Support Dog Melinda

We noticed Melinda “hanging out” on campus around June of last year. She would usually be lying down in a corridor on the side of the campus where there wasn’t much movement of people. Her skin was in bad condition. Many of us at school are dog lovers and we had a teacher who passed in May last year who was a big dog/animal lover. Her name was Melinda Greene. When we saw the dog we said this dog came here for us to take care of in honour of Ms. Greene because if Ms. Greene was alive she would take care of this dog and nurse the dog to health.

We named the dog after the teacher.

We started feeding Melinda and put her on Nexguard to help her skin condition.

We got her spayed and gave her her shots in September. She tested positive for heartworm so she had to receive a treatment of one injection every month for 6 months. Thankfully at the end of the treatment she tested negative for heartworm and now receives her monthly Heartguard treatment.

Melinda stayed on the school’s campus until one day I took her home and after that every day I would leave school she would try to follow me - so eventually I started taking her home daily and bringing her to work with me daily.

We noticed that Melinda was “gentle” because one of our autistic students would go up to her and pet her and sometimes she and the student would be playing together on the playing field - to the point where they would be laying down on each other
